The other visage of Spain

September 14, 2014

Last week, attending the south summit in Madrid which gathered technology entrepreneurs, investors, strategic vendors, universities and basically the full ecosystem. Net, I was very impressed by what I saw, listened and discussed; there is clearly a new generation of tech entrepreneurs full of energy, with new ideas, speaking perfect english, with great education background, and having in mind to build international business. The 2 main hubs remain Madrid and Barcelona but you discover sometimes companies created everywhere in the country. The majority of those businesses are internet, cloud or mobile as you can create and develop a global business from 1 location. I also met a number of entrepreneurs who are able to hire great workforce coming from various countries with a an excellent quality/costs ratio.

Companies like Zankyou, Ticketea, Medprive, Trip4real, Hooptap, Ofertia are great examples of very exciting companies which want to grow fast and internationally. For such companies, the key will be to attract international tech investors keen to support their business; for an initial phase the local vcs can and are definitely playing this role, then for the next stage of development, I do think that more and more London based investors or US investors with a real global approach would be interested in discovering and knowing such businesses.

During the last few years, news coming from Spain were not always great news so I think it is also important to realize that there are also exciting things coming for the future of this country !!!!
